2019 First Series of Life Skills and Gaining Preparedness Skills Training Announced

Join us as we focus on a variety of topics to help build your independence in the community!
Walton Options for Independent Living will be offering Life Skills Training and Employment Readiness Training for people with disabilities!

Let Your Voice Be Heard – Self Advocacy Life Skills Training
Thursday, January 10, 2019 – 3:00 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.
You have rights and a voice – it’s time you knew more about them! Our Self-Advocacy Class is designed to teach you more about different types of advocacy, and how you can advocate for yourself and others. You will learn what the Americans with Disabilities Act is as well as gain a better understand of disability rights and laws locally and on state and national levels.  Additionally, you will learn how to access advocacy resources and effect self-advocacy in the job market and in your community.

Get You Back to Work Orientation – Ticket to Work
Thursday, January 24, 2019 – 3:00 p.m.-4:30 p.m.
Our Gaining Preparedness Skills (GPS) are designed for individuals with disabilities interested in seeking knowledge, confidence and the resources for pursuing employment.
During the orientation introduction, you will learn about:

  • Walton Options and the services we provide
  • Employment Readiness Training Information
  • The Ticket to Work Program
  • Understanding the needs of Employers
  • Establishing an individual work plan
  • Including yourself in the work place
  • Empowering yourself through motivation
  • The impact of work on Social Security Benefits
  • Increasing your opportunity to successfully obtain gainful employment

This is an excellent introduction to the Ticket to Work program as well as ways to start your journey towards employment.

Mix and Munch – Meet & Greet the Youth and Employment Service Team
Thursday, February 21, 2019, 3:00 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.
Join us for a fun, open networking event to meet with like-minded individuals with shared interests of increasing positive opportunities for the disability community. The Youth and Employment Services team will be able to provide a tour of the Walton Options office, share information on our services, and discuss selected topics impacting the disability community. Light refreshments will be served.

My Life, My Way-Youth Transition
Tuesday, March 12, 2019 – 3:00 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.
So you’re ready for the next phase of your life but not exactly sure what that means? Whether it is moving from high school to employment, continuing/post-secondary education, living on your own, and/or discovering the path to your social and recreational self, My Life, My Way is the perfect place to start.

Our introductory training is designed to start a dialogue and share information on best practices as well as tips to help young individuals with disabilities live their lives their way. They will learn when a personal approach is taken, transitioning to the next step is an inclusive planning process that is driven by setting realistic goals and objectives.

Journey to Financial Independence – Job Search Training

Our job search learning session is designed for individuals with disabilities as you start to explore employment opportunities and obtain employment skills. The session focuses on preparation, job search techniques and provides options for best practices to help jump start the choice to obtain viable sustainable employment.
