WIPA Q&A Tips – Day 1

October 1 – SSI Monthly Wage Reporting Application

Question:  What happens to the wage information that a Supplemental Security Income (SSI) beneficiary enters into the SSI Wage Reporting Application?

Answer:  Social Security uses the wages reported through the Supplemental Security Income Monthly Wage Reporting (SSIMWR) application and through the Supplemental Security Income Telephone Wage Reporting (SSITWR) system to calculate the SSI payment.

Wage reports received through the SSIMWR application and the SSITWR system are processed the same way.  An individual can report the gross wages from the prior month using the application.  Social Security encourages individuals to report by the 6th of the current month to avoid overpayments, but they will accept the wage report any time during the current month (for prior month’s wages).

Once Social Security receives the report through the application, they post the wages as “reported”.  The SSI system will calculate SSI payments based on the reported information.  When the individual reports their wages through the application (or the telephone), the system will generate a receipt.

When Social Security and Internal Revenue Service (IRS) information interface, the computer will compare the “reported” wages and the IRS amounts.  If the reported wages match the IRS amount (or are within the tolerance), Social Security will not need further verification.

Both the SSIMWR application and the SSITWR system only accept monthly gross wages. If an individual has extra deductions, such as Impairment Related Work Expenses (IRWEs) or Blind Work Expenses (BWEs) they will need to go into the field office to receive the exclusion.
