Georgia Nonprofit Organization Awarded 2012 Neilsen Foundation Grant
The Center for Financial Independence & Innovation to Provide Down Payment Assistance Grants to Georgians with Traumatic Spinal Cord Injuries
Decatur, GA – May 9th, 2013 – The Center for Financial Independence & Innovation (CFII), a nonprofit organization designed to improve the financial self-sufficiency of Georgians with disabilities, is excited to be a 2012 recipient of grant funds from the Craig H. Neilsen Foundation. CFII will award fourteen $2,500 Down Payment Assistance Grants for Adapted Vehicles to individuals with traumatic spinal cord injuries (TSCIs) throughout Georgia in 2013. For those with TSCIs in need of an adapted vehicle, having a down payment may make the difference in not only approval for financing, but also being able to afford monthly payments.
Instead of relying on public transit, loved ones or caregivers, or tracking down other accessible transportation to get to school, work, medical appointments or recreational activities, people living with TSCIs who have their own transportation can maintain control over their daily routines and enjoy an independent and self-directed life. "The CFII is dedicated to helping individuals with disabilities and their family members advance their financial independence and security. We are proud to partner with the Neilsen Foundation to help Georgians living with TSCIs get on the road and into their communities," explains CFII Interim Executive Director Daphne Brookins.
As a prerequisite to receiving down payment assistance, qualified recipients will be required to complete two hours of financial and credit education, including creating a livable budget and understanding credit. These steps empower grantees with the knowledge they need to build economic independence and self-sufficiency.
The Craig H. Neilsen Foundation, established in 2002, funds programs supporting spinal cord injury (SCI) research and rehabilitation. The mission of the Neilsen Foundation is to improve the quality of life for those living with spinal cord injury and to support scientific exploration for effective therapies and treatments leading to a cure.
