Medicaid Cuts Could Impact YOU

Last week, the US House of Representatives passed a budget resolution which had in it $880 billion worth of proposed budget cuts to Medicaid. While not a budget bill, a budget resolution is a formal step in presenting a proposed bill in congress. Such cuts to Medicaid would drastically affect those who depend on it to receive healthcare. As of today, about 1 in 5 Americans benefit from Medicaid, that equals to about 80 million Americans nationwide.
Medicaid is the largest insurance provider for people with disabilities. Below are a few facts about Medicaid.
- According to the American Hospital Association, Medicaid covers 40% of births in the US and covers about 50% of births that occur in rural America.
- From medication and assistive technologies to transportation to doctors’ appointments and homecare assistants, Medicaid helps beneficiaries live their most healthy and independent lives possible.
- Medicaid doesn’t just serve the disabled and elderly, it also serves about 40% of the nation’s children through its CHIP program (Children’s Insurance Program). This care can cover something like a doctor’s visit or something like a speech therapist.
- In the state of Georgia in 2024, Medicaid was the primary payer for 63% of nursing home residents.
