Every July, Disability Pride is publicly acknowledged and celebrated with gatherings, proclamations, parades, and events of all kinds. It is important to raise awareness, build community, and give a voice and a platform to those who have been silenced for far too long.

Disability Pride is far more than what can be acknowledged in one month each year. It is a verb, and action that happens each day with each act of daily living by a person who acknowledges their disability and lives their lives their life with pride and determination. Disability Pride can and should be celebrated year-round.

This might leave you wondering what you can do to help support and celebrate Disability Pride. Between now and the end of July there will be various opportunities to celebrate with Centers for Independent Living (CILs) and disability-led organizations across South Carolina and Georgia both virtually and in person.

Every day is an opportunity to celebrate, acknowledge, and educate. Consider officially joining the independent living movement as a person with a disability or as an ally by joining in solidarity with the disability community working towards our common goals and objectives.
