July 26, 2015 marked the 25th Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Celebrations of the signing of the ADA by President George H.W. Bush on July 26, 1990 took place across the nation, including the CSRA.
To celebrate this 25th milestone, Walton Options for Independent Living scheduled a series of events including National Legacy Bus Tour stops in the Augusta and Aiken Areas. The celebration included:
- Wed May 27 Beyond Disability – Celebrating 25 years of the ADA with the GreenJackets
Featured a variety of activities centered around celebrating the ADA during the baseball game.
Lake Olmstead Stadium, Augusta, GA 7:00pm - Thurs May 28 & Fri May 29 Disability Museum Display Open to the Public
With exhibits from the National Legacy Tour, the Disability Rights Museum was a free exhibit open to the community celebrating the history of the ADA, its impact across the country and in the CSRA and look towards the future with photos, memorabilia and highlights from the national Road to Freedom Bus. The Bus was there on Thursday before it toured the Garden City on Friday.

We hosted a day of FREE fun and entertainment in Aiken to celebrate the last stop Road to Freedom Bus Stop in the CSRA. There were a variety of activities & entertainment including a Family Fun Area, live local entertainment, sports demonstrations, food, and more.

The ADA and the ADA Amendments Act of 2008 (ADAAA) give civil rights protections to individuals with disabilities similar to those provided to individuals on the basis of race, color, sex, national origin, age, and religion. The ADA and ADAAA also assure equal opportunity for individuals with disabilities for access to businesses, employment, transportation, state and local government programs and services, and telecommunications.
Because the ADA has and continues to make a positive impact on the CSRA, we had many local businesses involved with our celebration. All of our events (except the GreenJackets game) were free and open to the public.
