Programs & Opportunities
Supported by Fund Development

Camp TBI (To Be Independent) is a five-day, overnight camp for children and young adults, ages 10 to 21 who have an acquired traumatic brain injury. TBIs can result from trauma at birth, tumor, brain bleed, stroke, hydrocephalus, cerebral palsy, or later accident.
Camp TBI is held every June at Camp Twin Lakes in Rutledge, Georgia, a fully accessible camp, and is offered at no cost to families in Georgia or South Carolina. Camp TBI was launched in 2000 by Walton Foundation for Independence as part of its mission to provide opportunities for young adults and children with acquired traumatic brain injury. The camp, which continues to be sponsored by Walton Options for Independent Living, provides a safe, supervised environment, with a 1:1 or 1:2 counselor ratio where kids can just have fun. Those who need medical support and special diets are accommodated.
At Camp TBI, kids with traumatic brain injuries can just be kids. Campers have access to biking, horseback riding, arts and crafts, ceramics, wood burning, archery, swimming, farming, climbing wall, zip line and more.
Cabins are spacious and accommodate up to 12 campers and counselors who share the fully accessible cabin for the week. There is a fully equipped dining hall, arts and crafts building, medical lodge with two camp nurses, stables and riding arena, biking trails, snack cabin, zero entry pool and gym. Highlights of camp include a pool party, talent show and a camp dance.

Walton Family Weekend, typically held in October at Camp Twin Lakes in Rutledge, Georgia, is designed to provide opportunities for families to engage in recreational activities in an accommodating environment whereas they might typically experience a physical barrier in other places that are not accessible. Families also get to interact with other attendees and peers where they often bond and grow friendships. It is a relaxed time where everyone can participate at their leisure and possibly experience their first opportunity to zip line, climb ropes, paddle boat, or other numerous outdoor and indoor activities.
Space is limited! Walton Family Weekend is open to families in the CSRA where either the parent or the children of the parent have a physical disability. Children aged newborn to 18 are supervised by their parent or guardian who must be in attendance.
Adaptive Sports & Tournaments

We have opportunities where anyone of any age can participate, make new friends and learn new skills! Our adaptive sports, leisure, and recreation programs are led by trained volunteers thanks to community support. Options include adaptive golf, wheelchair racquet sports, and, thanks to our partnership with Catalyst Sports, adaptive biking and kayaking.
We are thrilled to collaborate with Catalyst Sports and the Georgia Rehabilitation Institute to expand adaptive sports opportunities in the CSRA. If you’re interested in adaptive kayaking, cycling, or mountain biking, you’ve found the right place. Whether you’re an experienced athlete or trying something new, we invite you to participate in this exciting initiative. Venture into the great outdoors, embrace individual strengths, and celebrate the transformative impact of sports.
