October Celebrations
During the month of October, let us be mindful and participate in the events that are designed to bring attention to and celebrate various milestones that are recognized during this month.

NDEAM – National Disability Employment Awareness Month
This year is the nation’s 75th observance of NDEAM, which is administered by the Department’s Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP). The observance culminates the Department’s commemoration of the 30th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
“Ensuring that America’s workplaces continue to include and accommodate people with disabilities will be an important part of our economic rebound,” said U.S. Secretary of Labor Eugene Scalia. “Looking ahead, the Department will remain focused on the policies that led to a strong economy and record-low unemployment rates for persons with disabilities prior to the pandemic. A vigorous economic rebound and job growth will, alongside the Americans with Disabilities Act, increase access and opportunity for Americans with disabilities.”
“People with disabilities are experienced problem solvers with a proven ability to adapt,” said Office of Disability Employment Policy Deputy Assistant Secretary, Jennifer Sheehy. “Now more than ever, flexibility is important for both workers and employers. National Disability Employment Awareness Month celebrates the ingenuity people with disabilities bring to America’s workplaces.”
Meet the Blind Month
The National Federation of the Blind celebrates Meet the Blind Month every October. Throughout the month, our members conduct a variety of outreach activities in their local communities. Many of these activities center on White Cane Awareness Day which is October 15. This year we are also focusing on lived experiences in our local communities with problem solving, self-confidence, and intersectionality.
White Cane Awareness Day
The National Federation of the Blind celebrates White Cane Awareness Day every year on October 15.
For blind people, the white cane is an essential tool that gives us the ability to achieve a full and independent life. It allows us to move freely and safely from place to place—whether it’s at work, at school, or around our neighborhoods.
White Cane Awareness Day is our way of emphasizing the critical role that this tool plays in living the lives we want and informing the public about its true significance. — NFB President Mark A. Riccobono.
We want to remember the importance of these monthly celebrations and the recognition they deserve. Let’s celebrate these initiatives and the power of our people! Happy October!
